A lot of adults can easily think back to the time when they knew kids who wore braces – and what those kids looked like is probably stuck in their minds since way back when. You might be picturing elastic bands, clunky metal hardware, eating habits that got seriously curtailed, and the sense of being a bit of an oddity. Those recollections can make a real difference in how people respond to, say, treatment for themselves or their kids later on. We think it’s worth clearing up some misconceptions about what orthodontia looks like these days. Early orthodontic treatment allows us to guide jaw development and correct bite issues before they become more complex. At Bozek Orthodontics, we typically recommend an initial evaluation around age seven to assess how teeth and the jaw are developing. Early treatment can reduce the need for more extensive care later and set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

For people looking into braces in Burlington, the questions they usually have are all pretty practical: just how noticeable is this appliance, exactly? What’s gonna change about their daily routine? How long will these appointments be, and when can they expect them? And what about eating? These are all valid questions, and consumers need to have a clear idea of what they’re getting themselves into before they make a decision. At Bozek Orthodontics, we do a thorough rundown of this at the beginning of every single initial visit. Orthodontic treatment is not just for children and teenagers – adults can achieve beautiful, lasting results too. At Bozek Orthodontics, we offer a range of adult-friendly treatment options including Invisalign and clear braces to fit busy lifestyles. Adult treatment can improve bite function, oral health, and confidence at any stage of life.

Braces themselves have come a long, long way. Compared to what came before, the metal brackets are smaller, less obtrusive in their profile, and the wires work more efficiently too – meaning your teeth get moved a lot more gently and with less associated discomfort. And don’t even get me started on the length and frequency of appointments – they’re usually pretty short, and you can usually fit ’em around your work or school schedule no problem. None of which makes getting treatment super easy, of course, but it does make it a heck of a lot more bearable than people who got older braces might remember.

When we’re working with younger patients, we typically start by evaluating where they’re at developmentally. Getting the timing right is really important – we want to make sure we’re giving the adult teeth and jaw a good chance to develop properly before we start working on them. What that usually means is we have a good look at some kids around the age of 7, and then we follow up a few years later to see where we’re at. Sometimes we’ll just keep an eye on things for a bit and then start treatment when the time is right. Other times we might do a shorter first phase and see from there. It all depends on what we see.

We’re getting a lot more requests from adults these days. Some of these people never got treatment as kids, and others might have let their retainer slip – which can cause their teeth to shift over time. The good news is: the orthodontic stuff still works even in adulthood – it just takes a bit longer to get the adult teeth in line. The end results can be pretty great too. We’ve helped loads of adults in Burlington who’d been putting off talking to a dentist for years.

We’re also upfront about the fact that a bit of discomfort is just part of the deal. You might have a bit of soreness for a day or two after each adjustment – but that’s easily fixed with soft foods and an over-the-counter painkiller or two. Most people tell us it’s really no big deal, and that it goes away pretty fast. After a couple of weeks the novelty of the whole thing starts to wear off and it becomes second nature.
