What to Expect on the First Day with Braces

Getting your braces placed is simple and painless. We use a special orthodontic adhesive to attach the brackets to your teeth, no needles.

Once we have all  your braces on and wires in,  we will review with you how to take care of your braces and give you a patient care kit and helpful instructions so you can care for your new smile at home.

How will they feel?

It’s completely normal for your braces to feel like they’re “sticking out” at first. This sensation usually fades as you get used to them. We recommend using orthodontic wax to help if any part of the braces irritates your cheeks or lips.

A few hours after your braces are on, you may begin to feel some mild discomfort as your teeth start to move. Some sensitivity to pressure is expected, especially when biting down. This discomfort typically lasts only a couple of days. Over the next few days it’s completely normal to experience some pressure, soreness, or mild discomfort as your teeth begin to shift into alignment. These early sensations are a positive sign — your braces are already working!

How will they feel?

To help you adjust more comfortably during your first few days:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relief (such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen), as you would for a mild headache.
  • Stick to a soft food diet for the first few days—think smoothies, mashed potatoes, yogurt, or soup.
  •  Use orthodontic wax to protect your cheeks and lips from any initial rubbing
  • Try cold compresses or saltwater rinses to ease soreness
